Project Description

Nepal faces escalating solid waste management challenges due to rapid urbanization, limited municipal capacity, and inadequate community awareness. To address this, CLEAN UP NEPAL implements a 12-month project across seven provinces, funded by Standard Chartered Bank Nepal Limited.

The initiative promotes sustainable waste management through targeted interventions: training vulnerable women in vermicomposting, equipping waste workers with occupational safety and PPE, and transforming banana fiber into marketable handicrafts. In eco-tourism areas, plastic-free campaigns and trail clean- ups are conducted. Schools receive zero-waste training, segregation bins, and access to an updated online learning platform.

A key innovation is the Safa Nepal application, a digital grievance tool enabling citizens to report waste dumping, open burning, and fecal sludge mismanagement, with local governments resolving complaints transparently.

The project prioritizes women, Dalit, Janajati, and informal waste workers, ensuring social inclusion. Expected impacts include 2,437 direct beneficiaries, 2,100 saplings planted, 100 kg of waste collected, and strengthened local governance aligned with Nepal Rastra Bank’s CSR directives and SDGs 5, 8, 11, 12, and 13. Through durable infrastructure, digital tools, and community ownership, the project delivers lasting environmental and economic resilience.
