From Challenge to Change: Improving Waste Management Practices in Ward No. 9, Itahari Sub-Metropolitan City through Durable Metal Bin Installation
25 May, 2026
Mr. Jitendra Thapa, aged 40, currently serves as the Chairperson of Ward No. 9 of Itahari Sub-Metropolitan City and has been holding this position for the past four years. Originally from Morang District, he lives with his family, which includes his 75-year-old grandmother, his 38-year-old wife, and their two daughters aged 14 and 9.
According to Mr. Thapa, waste management had long remained a challenge in Ward No. 9. In previous years, limited interventions had been implemented to address the waste management needs of the community. There were persistent gaps in public awareness, knowledge of sustainable waste management practices, and access to durable infrastructure for waste collection. As a result, maintaining cleanliness and encouraging responsible waste disposal among citizens remained difficult.
Recognizing these challenges, and following the recommendation of Itahari Sub-Metropolitan City, one set of durable metal bins was installed at the Bus Park area of Ward No. 9 under the “Green Steps: Empowering Nepal through Waste Reduction Project.”
The installation of the metal bins was designed to contribute to multiple objectives: promoting waste segregation at the source, reducing littering and improving cleanliness of public spaces, supporting recycling and resource recovery, minimizing health and environmental risks, and strengthening the municipal waste management system. The intervention also aimed to encourage responsible public behavior while providing a durable and cost-effective solution for long-term use.
Mr. Thapa shared that the installation of the metal bin has created a visible improvement in the ward’s waste management practices. Ward No. 9 now has a reliable and durable waste collection point serving the surrounding area. Waste collection and transportation to the disposal site are currently managed through a contracted service provider, Waste and Environment Pvt. Ltd.
He further highlighted that public awareness and community participation in proper waste management practices have improved over time. Compared to previous conditions, the area now remains cleaner and demonstrates more responsible waste disposal behavior among residents and visitors.
Mr. Thapa believes that durable metal bins can serve as an important foundation for the city’s future waste management development. He emphasized that investing in long-lasting infrastructure is an integral part of promoting sustainable environmental practices.
Looking ahead, he suggested that continued monitoring and follow-up support from Itahari Sub-Metropolitan City will be essential to further strengthen public awareness and encourage responsible behavior among citizens. Mr. Thapa also expressed optimism for future collaboration with CLEAN UP NEPAL in advancing environmental and sustainable waste management initiatives.
