Policy Dialogue in Kapilvastu Sparks Community-Led Environmental Action
On June 2, 2025, CLEAN UP NEPAL successfully conducted a one-day Policy Dialogue in Kapilvastu Municipality to assess the effectiveness of local environmental, waste management, and climate-related policies. The session brought together 21 committed participants—16 women and 5 men—including CSO members, cooperative representatives, youth leaders, women’s groups, and DSDS staff, with participation from the DSDS chairperson. Wards 2, 3, 4, 5, and 12 were represented.
Participants openly discussed key issues such as poor waste segregation, limited public awareness, lack of infrastructure, and weak coordination between municipal and ward-level stakeholders. Despite these challenges, the dialogue was filled with energy and solutions, especially driven by female and youth leadership. A major outcome was the collective agreement to establish Ward-Level Environmental Watch Groups to promote civic participation and environmental oversight.
In addition, DSDS and CSO representatives pledged to submit a policy recommendation memo to the municipality, reinforcing their commitment to lasting change. This event marks a significant step toward inclusive, community-driven environmental governance in Kapilvastu.
