Plastic Waste Management Training

We are excited to share the highlights from our recent 2-day Plastic Waste Management Training, which was attended by 500 Informal Waste Workers (IWWs) in Nepal. This important initiative is part of the RIVER+ project, a joint effort by Biocomp Nepal, People in Need Nepal, and CLEAN UP NEPAL, with support from the World Bank and UNOPS. On Day 1, we kicked off the training with an engaging Waste Sorting Relay, making the topic of waste management both fun and interactive. Participants learned about the different types of waste, particularly plastics, and the significant health and environmental hazards tied to poor waste management practices. Key topics covered included the solid waste management laws in Nepal, plastic production and recycling, and the 7 plastic identification codes. We also had a practical exercise where participants practiced segregating plastic waste while learning about essential Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) measures.

On Day 2, the focus shifted to a deeper understanding of plastic properties and their environmental impact, especially concerning microplastics. Participants received a “Know Your Plastic Kit” to help them identify common plastic waste found in Nepal’s markets. We also explored the potential for upcycling, showcasing creative upcycled plastic products. The day included a practical session on household-level plastic segregation and guidelines for informal waste workers and recyclers. We also introduced the Plastic to Value Kit, designed to help waste aggregators enhance their collection and processing efforts.

This training is part of the broader RIVER+ project, which aims to combat plastic pollution in rivers and seas. Through educating and empowering informal waste workers, we are contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable future for Nepal. The project is supported by the Plastic Free Rivers and Seas for South Asia program, implemented by the South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme, with funding from the World Bank and UNOPS. Together, we are committed to tackling plastic pollution and protecting our rivers and environment for future generations.
