Gaijatra, the festival of cows, (gai means cow and jatra means festival in Nepali: गाईजात्रा, and Nepal Bhasa: सापारु) is celebrated in Nepal, mainly in Kathmandu valley by the Newar and Tharu community. The festival commemorates the death of people during the year. During the festival, cows are marched in the streets and generally celebrated in the Nepalese month of Bhadra (August–September). It falls on the 1st day of the dark fortnight of Gunla according to the lunar Nepal Era calendar. People also distribute food to others. The festival of cows is one of the most popular festivals of Nepal.
This year it was celebrated on Monday, 11 August 2014 and the Clean up Nepal team assisted in coordinating the Waste Free Community Program during the Gai Jatra Festival from 7am to 3pm at Kathmandu Durbar Square. The Clean up Nepal team also prepared 200 placards with environmental slogans to raise awareness on littering practices, the need for recycling and reusing, and the need for individuals and communities to make environmentally conscious choices. Clean up Nepal was of the many stakeholders working to organize the 8th Waste Free Community Program at Kathmandu Durbar Square. The program was organised by Lakasa Mhalashala Pucha and co-organised by Force Nepal and Jhochhen Samudayik Samaj.
The aim of the program was to raise awareness of the mismanagement of general waste generated during this festival; work to manage the food that is given to the cows and individuals participating in the march to commemorate the death of their loved ones; and raise awareness on environmental issues through the display of hundreds of placards.
