Whilst carrying out field visits in November 2015, Clean up Nepal realized that waste burning is a significant problem in Thaiba. Additionally although most of the community intuitively segregates their waste into organic and inorganic, they were not aware of systematic waste segregation into wet, dry and reject categories, and the importance of such segregation.
Clean up Nepal therefore organised interactive workshops at Thaiba over three days as part of its Litter-free Neighbourhood Program. The workshops were held in Ward no. 10 on 3 December, Ward no. 11 on 4 December and Ward no. 12 on 5 December to ensure members of the community could easily access the venue. A total of 124 participants attended the workshops over the three days.

The workshop consisted of a quick survey, community engagement and awareness raising training on “Waste Segregation: Why and How?” and “The Impacts of Waste Burning”. The workshops were coordinated with the support of the Shree Ganesthan Mahila Bahu-udeshya Sahakari Sanstha, Thaiba. Clean up Nepal also distributed pamphlets on waste segregation and waste burning to the participants, and placed awareness raising ‘Do not Litter’ metal signboards along with laminated posters on waste segregation at various locations in Thaiba.
