Clean up Nepal 2014 Rivers Day: Cleanup and Cycle Rally

Clean up Nepal Rivers Day 2014 was celebrated on the occasion of the International Day of Action against Dams and for Rivers, Water and Life on Saturday, 15 March 2014 from 8am onwards. The program provided a platform to celebrate and highlight the importance of our rivers, and more importantly the need to keep it clean and to make the banks of our rivers usable, functional spaces. It also incorporated a cycle rally component in our bid to promote cycling as a much healthier and more sustainable form of transport.

The objectives of the Clean up Nepal Rivers Day 2014 were to:

  • raise awareness on the importance of rivers for healthy ecosystems and human well-being;
  • share success stories of cleanup efforts of rivers;
  • encourage local communities to cleanup river banks and rivers on an ongoing basis;
  • create opportunities for stakeholders to work in synergy through the identification of working areas; and
  • advocate for greater investment in government spending on environmental issues.

Clean up Nepal Rivers Day 2014 was jointly organised by Clean up Nepal, Lalitpur Sub-Metropolitan City, World Cyclist Foundation Nepal and community members from wards 1, 2 and 10 of the Lalitpur Sub-Metropolitan City.  The event was also being supported by Chyasal Youth Club, Women’s Environment Preservation Committee, Save Baaghmati Campaign, the Centre for Integrated Urban Development, Samyubaa, the Rotaract Club of Chandragiri, the Nepal River Conservation Trust, Womens’ Environment Group, Football Club Kupondole, Friends’ Club Kopundole and Vajra Academy.
